The Learning is as Important as the Landing

Recently, I sent out a newsletter with a survey link embedded in it. This was my first foray into creating a survey and, I must say, I was pretty proud of myself.

And then, I got one, and then another, and another, message from a reader letting me know that the links did not allow them to access the surveys. UGH! Let me describe the half pipe I traversed in a matter of seconds:

  1. Top of the pipe — Created the survey by myself. Figured out how to embed it into the newsletter. Felt easy!
  2. Dropping off the edge — The emails start coming in saying that the links are broken. Felt embarrassed; that I would be seen as less than professional for not having gotten this right the first time.
  3. Hitting the bottom — Wasn’t intuitive what the problem was with the surveys. Took me a bit to figure it out.
  4. Gaining momentum as I climb the pipe — realized the gift my readers had given me. They weren’t just on my mailing list, they were part of my tribe. They read my notes and look to support my work.

What did I learn or, rather, re-learn? That anytime you stretch outside of your comfort zone, it’s highly unlikely that it will go flawlessly on the first run. I also realized that what, at one time, would have left me in a crumpled heap at the bottom of the pipe, now gave me momentum to reach new heights. Instead of beating myself up for having made a mistake, and shying away from trying something new, I’m embracing it as an opportunity.

I appreciate you reading this week’s blog! For more concepts and strategies on leadership, personal growth, management, (and to help me double-check my survey links!) subscribe to my newsletter here.
